Overview
Sunny Malik is the Indian Idol 11 winner in 2020. He started his career with his first song ‘akhiya de buhe’ which was released in 2014 by TMC Punjabi. Later, Sunny participated in the show ‘entertainment ke liye kuch bhi karega’ in the same year. In 2019, he was seen performing as a contestant on the popular reality show, ‘Indian Idol’ season 11.
Sunny received laurels from judges of the show for singing ‘afreen afreen’ by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. His favorite singer is Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Shankar Mahadevan. Sunny is a big fan of Salman Khan. Sunny loves to travel and to play tabla, dholak and harmonium.
He sang with many well-known singers such as – Hansraj Hans, Lakhbie Singh Lakkha and Master Salim at very young age. This shows that singing was an inbuilt talent of Sunny. He popularly known by his nickname ‘laddoo’ among his family and friends. ‘Sunny Hindustani’ is the moniker that he earned by the ‘Indian Idol’ show. Sunny revealed that he never had any formal training for music but he learned music and singing through phone only.
Early Life & Family
Sunny Malik was born in 1998 in Amarpura Basti, Bathinda , Punjab. Sunny was always interested in music and always worked hard for it since childhood. Sunny studied in school of Bhatinda only. He was a very active student in his school and participated in all annual and cultural activities. Being good at singing and music, he dropped his school at the class 6 and started performing at many other events and functions in his locality and villages nearby. His father, Nanak Ram Malik gifted Sunny a harmonium and a tabla when he noticed his passion about music. In 2014, his father passed away due to prolonged illness.
Sunny was the one to take care of his family and for the survival he started working as boot polisher. His family belongs to Sansi community and his father was a singer and shoe shiner. Whereas, his mother Soma Malik is a balloon seller. Sunny also has three sisters- Rekha, Maya and Sakhina in his family. He was very upset at that time by seeing his mother selling balloons and had to beg people for rice. But Sunny won the show and fulfilled his dream and his success was the reward of his struggle of his and his family.

Sunny Hindustani is a popular singer after winning the season 11 of one of the most popular show ‘Indian idol’ in 2019. He had a keen interest in music and singing and fought with poverty and won the show at finale. When he won the show hes said that “I had not thought of getting through the first round also, leave alone winning the competition. I have come a long way and can’t believe that the journey has just started. From getting the opportunity to sing on such a big platform to winning the show is like all my dreams. I can’t believe that the whole of India heard my voice and voted for me wholeheartedly to make me Desh Ki Awaaz.” His first song was ‘ankhen ke buhe’ in 2014.
Sunny also impressed business tycoon Anand Mahindra. He also shared his audition round. Along with that Mahindra added that “Diwali is the perfect day to learn about people who rise. A friend sent me this saying he was in tears watching it. Find the whole clip on YouTube and I challenge you to remain dry-eyed. TV and social media have done us a great service-discovering talent in the humblest locations”.
On his success his mother said that” He himself applied for Indian Idol audition in Chandigarh. I am happy that his talent is being recognized. After the death of Sunny’s father we had a debt of around Rs.2.50 lakh. We had to sell our house and bought lane here and somehow managed to construct two rooms.
The power connection was disconnected after we could not deposit the electricity bill”. This is how a small town boy earned this much and successfully took care of his family and obeyed his responsibility.
